O.T. Doe D.O. is a brevet with a deep appreciation for a favorite permanent route, Over to Dover Do Over.  This route features modest climbing on quiet roads from Frederick, MD to Dover, PA and back.

The major change from the permanent route is the start and finish, which begins at the Dunkin on Yellow Springs Road in order to get brevet services.  The first control is at 45 miles, convenience stores on the outskirts of New Oxford.  From there the biggest climbing is in the final miles approaching Dover, where the route turns back on parallel roads.

In Dover the relaxed riders might stop at the Moonlight Café, on the route, or add a couple tenths to get to the Turkey Hill convenience store.  On the way back there is a control in New Oxford, where Deja Brew and 7-Eleven are both on the route.  The last services are at mile 107 where there is an optional stop on the way into Emmitsburg.  At the end we break bread at Pizza Blitz, across the street from the start.

This brevet starts in daylight, but the sun sets less than 12 hours later.  Winds on this route from the south west or west can disrupt the trip home (or from the north east or east on unusual days on the way to Dover.)  If there is a chance of finishing after sunset, including by bad luck or a tough day on the bike, be sure you can comply with Article 10 of the RUSA rules, concerning lights and visibility.  Registration for O.T.Doe.D.O. is at DCRand.org.

DC Randonneurs will be sponsoring an International Women’s Day ride on Saturday, March 5, 2022. The ride will be an opportunity to join celebrations with women occurring all over the world.  We will participate in an activity we all enjoy, show our skill and strength, and expand the cycling experience of additional women.

The ride starts in Northwest DC and uses frequently ridden roads to travel into rural Montgomery County.  Poolesville provides a mid-ride opportunity to re-supply.  Free street parking is available off MacArthur Boulevard at the start/finish, with a Starbuck's for pre-ride needs.  After the ride, Go Popolo provides an excellent taste of pizza nearby.  Social distancing and mask wearing at the start and finish will be maintained.  We ask all riders to maintain social distancing while on their bikes.

Ye Olde Frederick 300 is a club favorite, designed by Crista Borras and ridden almost annually since the late 1990s. Starting from Frederick, the route heads north, skirting South Mountain as far as Thurmont and then turns west to climb MD77 through Catoctin Mountain State Park. Just short of the summit, it heads roughly north-north-east into Pennsylvania and through the rolling apple and peach orchards of Adams County. Along the way it climbs Jacks Mountain Rd, with its multiple false summits and swooping descent to a covered bridge.

From Arendtsville, the route turns northwest and begins a long, stair-step climb with many steep sections, just to get you properly fatigued before the climb up Big Flat. After turning left on Shippensburg at mile 59, you’re finally ascending the false summit before Big Flat (altitude 1650 feet) before a rapid descent to a stop sign at Pine Grove Rd, followed by the real climb to the summit of Big Flat (altitude 2040 feet). Nine miles–including the sweetest descent on any of our routes–brings riders to a much needed rest stop and control in Shippensburg.

By this time, you’ve done about half the climbing of the ride, so keep your spirits up, it does get easier, with the lovely sequence of Mud Level Rd, Oakville Rd and Red Shed Rd. If you want to get back to Frederick, there’s just one more big climb over a low pass of South Mtn on Whiskey Springs Rd, and then the terrain is rolling all the way home, with a stop in East Berlin for pizza or barbeque, to get you ready for that long haul down to Thurmont for a final chance of resupply before the last miles in to Frederick.

The Lady and the Barons takes advantage of cycling roads and trails in Anne Arundel and Calvert counties.  The name of the route is derived from the namesakes of the two counties, Lady Anne of Arundel and the Barons Calvert.  The terrain is gently rolling with a few steep pitches along the way, as it travels from Severna Park to the Chesapeake Bay and then touches the Patuxent River twice.  These are some favorite cycling roads that only see the big towns of West Annapolis (early in the morning) and Chesapeake Beach.

Designed by Crista Borras and ridden by the club in different forms since the late 1990s, the Northern Exposure 400 kilometer brevet is a beautiful and challenging expedition to Newport PA on the Juniata River. Many of our brevets ride through Cumberland Valley in the region of Shippensburg, PA, leaving us to wonder what is in the mountains to the north and west of the valley? This brevet answers that question. Alternatively, the USGS answer to that question is that the Cumberland Valley is part of what it defines as the Great Appalachian Valley and the mountains to the north and west are part of the Ridge and Valley Appalachians.

Starting from Frederick, we ride north on familiar and easy roads to Thurmont. We cross Catoctin Mountain on Sabillasville Rd heading into the Michaux State Forest, one of the more beautiful and easygoing crossings. This is the same route that the South Mountain 600 takes on the first day, as far as Sabillasville, but there the routes part, with the Northern Exposure route climbing over South Mountain and into and across the Cumberland Valley. From Roxbury, riders climb over Kittatinny Mountain into the Path Valley, with its picturesque Amish farms and long mountain views. The route continues northwest through the Path Valley and Horse Valley to East Waterford, followed by a gentle climb over Tuscarora Mountain and then a scenic cruise to Newport.

After a stop in Newport, riders climb over Blue Mountain, back into the Cumberland Valley. After passing Children’s Lake in lovely Boiling Springs, riders return to familiar roads, joining the route of the Frederick 300 for the return over South Mountain on Whiskey Springs Rd, eventually passing Lake Meade, controlling at East Berlin, continuing on through Thurmont and the relatively easy terrain back to Frederick.

There are many stop-lights going through Frederick. Please respect these as the cross traffic is sometimes fast and hard to see. The roads in Frederick may be rough–showing the effect of a long winter plus construction; exercise suitable caution. Going out through downtown Frederick in the morning is especially nice. Watch for traffic when you return to Frederick as it will likely be heavier that going out.

This is a Lynn Kristianson route first ridden by the club in 2010. While the first day hasn't changed much over the years, the second day has. This year the second day returns to something like the original trip north to Maryland, but without all the climbing on the Maryland side of the river. Instead, riders will travel from Point of Rocks to Brunswick on the very flat W&OD trail, so bring your fat tires if you have them.

Starting from the Warrenton Hampton Inn, riders head south and west, down to Griffinsburg where the route turns south into Madison County down to Somerset. From there we head west for many miles on 609/Scuffletown Rd with wonderful Blue Ridge views and moderate terrain, to a control in Dyke. From there we ride the very scenic 810 through the foothills in Greene and Albemarle counties.

After Dyke, the terrain gets a little more hilly through Crozet and down toward the James River. Brown’s Store at about the 200 kilometer point may provide welcome relief as riders near the turning point of the route a little southwest of Scottsville.Moving east from the mountains, the terrain moderates through Fluvanna and Louisa counties. After a possible dinner stop in Louisa, the route heads NNW toward a control in Orange.

The route out of Orange passes through Rapidan and then turns east on fully paved roads to the familiar Algoquin Trail. Bypassing the narrow, dark roads around Kelly’s Ford, the route heads north to Brandy Station and then east to Remington. Crossing US15, 29 and 17 a number of times, riders return to Warrenton from the southeast.

The Mason Dixon 1000k/1200k travels country roads through places where US Civil War factories hummed, crops grew, slaves reached freedom, and critical battles raged.  The route includes the Blue Ridge and South mountains, Shenandoah Valley, the iconic Antietam and Gettysburg battlefields, and Pennsylvania Dutch Country, all in the Mason Dixon region that functionally separated Union and Confederate territories.  Our website is full of information about the Civil War history of this land, prominently including social history like the Underground Railroad.

The same registration is used for both distances.  The price is the same for both as well.  Please note in the comments section of registration if you plan on doing the 1000k.

Included in the ride price are 3 overnights, breakfast and dinner on all ride days, T-Shirt, and a finisher's medal.  Lodging the night before and the night after the ride are not included.  Rider's should contact the hotel for reservations on extra nights or arrange their own lodging.

There are two qualifications for this ride:

    2. You must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination.

In order to bring you a quality ride, there are limits to what we can refund.  We will refund as much as we can according to the following policy.

The Mason-Dixon 200 is a point-to-point brevet run on Day 4 of the Mason-Dixon 1200.  This allows 1000k rider to ride back to the start of the Mason-Dixon 1000 in Leesburg, VA if they choose, on the exact same route the 1200k riders are on.  The brevet is open to all other randonneurs who take on the challenge of starting in Columbia, PA and finishing in Leesburg.  The route is on the flat-to-rolling spectrum of terrain in these parts, and it is designed to avoid some tough climbing at the end for those who have been on the road for four days.
