O.T. Doe D.O. is a brevet with a deep appreciation for a favorite permanent route, Over to Dover Do Over. This route features modest climbing on quiet roads from Frederick, MD to Dover, PA and back.
The major change from the permanent route is the start and finish, which begins at the Dunkin on Yellow Springs Road in order to get brevet services. The first control is at 45 miles, convenience stores on the outskirts of New Oxford. From there the biggest climbing is in the final miles approaching Dover, where the route turns back on parallel roads.
In Dover the relaxed riders might stop at the Moonlight Café, on the route, or add a couple tenths to get to the Turkey Hill convenience store. On the way back there is a control in New Oxford, where Deja Brew and 7-Eleven are both on the route. The last services are at mile 107 where there is an optional stop on the way into Emmitsburg. At the end we break bread at Pizza Blitz, across the street from the start.
This brevet starts in daylight, but the sun sets less than 12 hours later. Winds on this route from the south west or west can disrupt the trip home (or from the north east or east on unusual days on the way to Dover.) If there is a chance of finishing after sunset, including by bad luck or a tough day on the bike, be sure you can comply with Article 10 of the RUSA rules, concerning lights and visibility. Registration for O.T.Doe.D.O. is at DCRand.org.
