Ride Report - The Lady and the Barons

This is a pleasant route through Anne Arundel and Calvert Counties, flattish at the ends and lumpy in the middle - nothing too big but lots of small and sometimes steep climbs.

The route first heads into Annapolis...as you cross the Severn River you can spot the narrow dome of the Maryland State House, the fat dome of the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel, and even the Naval Academy Cemetery where dignitaries such as Senator John McCain rest.

Given that there are no services for 21 miles after you depart Bestgate Road (mile 10.9), some might hit the 7-Eleven or Wawa on that road. From there you turn right onto General’s Highway, which is a historical route from the Revolutionary War and was the route taken by George Washington when he traveled to the afore-mentioned Maryland State House to resign his commission as Commander in Chief of the Army. Fun fact: Rams Head Roadhouse (mile 12.6) was the finishing timing station for RAAM 2008-2023. Beyond that, RAAM riders could take an easy roll to the Annapolis City Dock for the finishing ceremony.

Look for the herd of bison on the right at mile 20.8 at the left turn. Hopefully the warning signs quash any ideas about climbing in for selfies!

The next service is the High’s at mile 31.9, but I highly recommend you wait until mile 47.5 for Chesapeake Market. Lots of snacks and a fantastic grill…my egg/cheese/scrapple sandwich was twice the size I expected.

From there it's about 40 miles of back roads with several beautiful water views. There are several opportunities for services along the way, with the most notable beginning at mile 87.3 in Deale.  At that left turn is the very nice South County Cafe and their wide assortment of ice cream, sandwiches, bakery goods, full meals, etc. ; but if you just want typical rando fare the next mile contains a Subway, 7-Eleven, High’s, and pizza joint.

Your final opportunity to stock up before the services near the end comes at the large and recently remodeled Exxon at mile 96.4. If you eat there you will be joining George Washington, who ate at Rawling’s Tavern at that same intersection back in 1773.

We will finish the ride at Squisito's Pizza!

Who We Are

DC Randonneurs sponsors long-distance cycling events in the Mid-Atlantic region ranging from 100 kilometers to 1,200 kilometers (60 - 750 miles) in length. Rides start from the Baltimore-Washington region but travel as far afield as State College PA, Buchanan VA, and Warm Springs WV.

The terrain we ride ranges from the flatlands of the Eastern Shore to the rolling hills and valleys of the Piedmont and the sometimes steep flanks of the Appalachian mountain ridges to our west. Our routes, many of which we've ridden for years, take quiet back roads through gorgeous and varied scenery, with regular stops for supplies and rest.

Our rides are unsupported. There is no sag wagon, and help of any sort can be miles away on some of the more remote stretches of road we ride. But we ride together, creating bonds of friendship and camaraderie along the way. Our ride organizers and volunteers work hard to make sure that every rider is accounted for, from start to finish.

Our rides are timed, with riders required to reach intermediate control points, as well as the finish, within a set window of time. But our results are listed alphabetically. Our style of riding is know as allure libre, meaning riders ride at their own pace within the limits set by control opening and closing times rather than riding as a group at a steady pace set by its leaders, which is the audax style of randonneuring.

Randonneuring is non-competitive, but we challenge ourselves and each other -- to ride farther, to ride faster, to ride longer than we might have though possible. We aspire to relentless forward progress but take time to help each other when in need, whether that need is for emotional support, an energy bar to cure a bonk, or a cleverly improvised fix to broken equipment.

DC Randonneurs is affiliated with Randonneurs USA and operates according to the rules promulgated by that organization by adoption from the Audax Club Parisien.
