The Mountain Church 200, first ridden by DC Randonneurs in 2017, is Roger Hillas's reworking of Lynn Kristianson's Coffee Quest permanent. It starts from the Starbucks at 5185 MacArthur Boulevard in the Palisades neighborhood of DC. Plenty of street parking is available nearby, especially between MacArthur and the Potomac River, but check the signage for restrictions (you cannot park on the block directly in front of Starbucks on Saturdays).

The ride begins gently, but the rollers grow quickly after Potomac, Maryland. Back roads take us around Poolesville to Maryland 28 near Dickerson, then on to the control at Stups Market in Adamstown. Instead of continuing west across Marlu Ridge, the route heads south and crosses the Potomac River at Point of Rocks. A gradual climbs takes us to the second control in Lovettsville, Virginia (to the new 7-Eleven), and an equally gradual descent leads to Brunswick, where we cross the Potomac back into Maryland. After climbing out of the Potomac basin, the route wanders through farmland and far suburbs to Burkettsville. This time, instead of making the familiar climb up to Gapland, it skirts the base of South Mountain north to the informational control that gives the ride its name.

From there, moderate rollers take us to the open control in Middletown. The Main Cup will be a great place to stop for a sit-down lunch with your fellow riders, or the Subway nearby for something a bit quicker. Then come the formidable rollers between Middletown and Jefferson. We climb Marlu Ridge the easy way, with its spectacular view west towards Harper’s Ferry and south into Virginia as far as Old Rag, if the day is clear enough. If a tailwind is blowing, we’ll speed home on a route that is more exposed and somewhat hillier than the outbound route. After Potomac, the road levels out, with only the descent back down to the Potomac basin and a flat ride along MacArthur between us and the finish at Del Popolo SPK Pizza at 4885 MacArthur Boulevard.

A relatively gentle ride through Leesburg, Bluemont, Middleburg, Purcellville, and Waterford with stops at cafes in Purcellville and Middleburg. The ride immediately starts with the well known gravel climb up Waterford road on the way to the first coffee stop at the Sweet Rose Bakeshop in Purcellville. A few miles past Purcelville, you’ll arrive in familiar territory at the Bluemont General Store. Heading south, you’ll hit Middleburg, Horse country! Grab a cup of coffee at Cuppa Giddy Up, then finish up the route heading northeast on unpaved roads back to Leesburg.  This is a starter gravel randonneuring (GRANDO) route that can be done comfortably on 700x28s due to the surfaces primarily being hardpack; however there are extended sections of gravel roads up to 8 miles in length and 700x32 or larger tires would be the most comfortable.  Approx 60% unpaved, 41 miles.

This is the registration for the Dart. However, to finish your registration you need to complete the following steps:

The Dart populaire has rules that are somewhat different, and perhaps even more arcane, than those for a standard brevet. Rules for the Dart populaire are here. Some of them are summarized as follows:

    • Each team must consist of three to five bicycles. (Note that a tandem counts as a single bicycle, so teams will sometimes contain more than five riders.)

    • The traditional Dart route starts at some distant location and then heads for the target, but a loop route is also allowed, as long as the start location is far enough from the finish to be considered as a different postal jurisdiction. Your route cannot start in the 17325 zip code.

    • As in a standard brevet, the routes must contain control locations chosen so that the shortest bicycle-legal route through the controls is equal to at least the minimum distance. However, the Dart has an additional requirement that one of the controls must occur exactly 2 hours before the scheduled finish and be at least 25 km from the finish. That control would be 6 hours after the start of the Dart populaire.

Each team must have a captain who is responsible for designing the route and submitting it for approval. Captains should carefully read the rules first. The schedule will be:

October 1: Applications from captains due to the organizer (Bill Beck) including 1) 2022 Dart team captain regform, 2) 2022 Dart route application. These forms can be found in the Dart 2022 folder here. The route information can be submitted electronically to william.a.beck@gmail.com in PDF, MS Word, or MS

Excel format. Route files from RWGPS will also be appreciated, but not required.

October 15: Final rosters with 2022 Tracking Form due to Bill Beck. Deadline for final route approval.

October 15: Control cards submitted to Bill Beck for approval. (He can help generate these, if desired.)

    October 29: Dart

Team captains are responsible for making sure that their team members have registered.

Please contact Bill Beck (william.a.beck@gmail.com) with any questions. We also have many experienced fleche and dart captains in the club who would be excellent sources of advice. If you are thinking of forming a team or looking for a team to join, the dcrand listserve is one good way to connect with other riders.

This flat Eastern Shore route follows much of the Underground Railroad driving tour, and takes in a large portion of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, where the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park is located.  This route adds to DCRand's list of "flatbread" November routes, with their tradition of fast runs.  RWGPS rates this at 10 feet of climbing per mile!

This is DCRand's classic December brevet, with moderate climbing, mostly near the turnaround in Dillsburg, and at the end.  Dillsburg provides good lunch options, and the early December date provides the chance to enjoy Christmas lights for those riders who don't speed through to a daylight finish.
